Isaiah and Kala's Life Of Humanities

Hi there! Welcome to our blog. Here is our reflections of how we grew as readers and writers and what we learned in humanities in eighth grade. We live in the east side and we go to a school where we achieve, believe and conceive.

Take a stand a poem

Take a stand
for a good thing,
for something special.

Take a stand,
Take a stand,
Take a stand.

Take a stand
for a good cause.

Poetry by Isaiah

"From Sunrise To Sunset"
At sunrise, I wake up feeling dull as can be

Worrying if my life will finally be free
I'm failing in school but it's not my entire fault
I'm like a snail that has melted in a pile of salt.
By noon, my mood has finally changed
From darkness in dawn, to completely deranged
When sunset comes, I'm better now
Because I finally understand that I'm 100% human.

" Monsters and Magic"
From the night when it happened it was all a giant blur
It was as pressuring as speaking to a man and saying: "Yes, Sir"
But deep down inside when I looked through a mirror
I knew that the moon was getting nearer and nearer
I tried to run as fast as I could
But my little motive legs were as stiff as blocks of wood
It was MAGIC that changed me, I had to be sure
Because I was a scary, ridiculous MONSTER.

A poem called Me!!!!!!

I'm nice
I'm sweet
I'm a cool friend
I'm me.

I'm mean when i want to,
I'm respectful
I'm active
I'm me!!

I'm a reader
I'm a writer
I'm me.

I'm me
I'm me
I'm me.

A poem called What If.

What if I was small,
what if I was in a mall.
what if i had an elephant
as small as a ball.

what if that elephant was as big as the earth,
what if the earth can do art.what if people
are blue or red.

what if children can rule their parents,
what if children don't have to be caring.

what if? what if? what if?

what if a gate is called a fence,
what if i called my brother my sister.

isaiah 'n kala's essential question reflection

We have studied the question: "Why Do We Fight?" and " Should War Have Rules?". To find the answer, we traveled back to the year 1939, the start of World War 2. In this, we found out one of the reasons why we fight and that is: W-A-R-!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We discovered that Mr. Harry S. Truman was involved in WW2 by ending it with the Japanese in Hiroshima and Nagasaki with the famous atomic bomb. For this, we have a poem made by Isaiah:
"Why Do We Fight?"
- Isaiah Garcia
Dear Mr. President, "Why Do We Fight?"
"Why do we battle all day and all night?"
"Why do we have innocent soldiers killed?"
"Why do we countless enemies thrilled?'
"When will we stop?"
"When will we cease?"
"When will all this hate and violence go to peace?"

This poem (which is so beautiful and sad) relates to the world because we fight everyday. Another reason we fight is because we don't like one's race or what they are. In fact, there was a certain person who didn't like the race of the Jews. That person was named Adolf Hitler. He killed over 1,000,000 Jews and injured over 1,000 of them. Here is another poem.

"Don't Kill, Adolf!"
Watch what you do
Watch what you say
Don't make fun of people just like you, Hitler
Don't be a hater
Don't be a killer
Don't be a unusual debater/ driller
Without their race
They wouldn't be different
Without our race,
We wouldn't be different
We are a part of life
We make decisions
We make the choices
We get to choose who we want to be
If you want to be evil,
That's fine with us
Just don't show it around here again.

In all, we live in war and fights. We also went into the Spanish-American war. We went into it because Cuba was being held captive by Spain and we had to rescue them because there were people from the U.S. there and we also had a sugar business with Cuba. So, we sent a ship called the U.S.S. Maine to Cuba to rescue Cuba. 7 weeks later, the ship was exploded killing a lot of people and over 900 injured. We tried to find out who exactly blew up the ship, but no evidence was found. After many events, we went into war with Spain.

We have had many difficulties in history and why we fight deals with war, race, hate and death. In all why we fight is because we obviously have a problem with a certain thing. For example, Hitler and the Jews. Should war have rules yes because you don't want someone not to be fair, right? that would be the same as cheating on your friend in a History test. Overall, that is why we fight and the rules of war.

Just don't show it around here again.

isaiah n' kala's writing reflection

when Isaiah started the eighth grade, he wasn't that good of a writer. he really didn't like writing essays or writing paragraphs. But then he learned how to write. Very Awesome paragraphs. Kala really didn't have that much trouble with writing , but also she needed some help. With a little help Kala now writes beautiful paragraphs and sentences. At the beginning of the year ,we didn't know the different strategies of writing , but now we know how to chunking and use run- off sentences etc.....
How we grew as a writers has definitely had changed. For example, Isaiah know how to give examples in his writing and Kala knows how to rewrites sentences in her own words. Now, she still likes writing and always liked it. Kala was bored with writing in the beginning and the middle of the year ,Now, Kala is fascinated with writing. For example i didn't know how to give example, but now i know how to give example and defending my sentences.
In the end of the year, Kala now writes more at home and at school. Isaiah uses challenging words when writing his essays. Also, Kala knows how to give examples to back up her writing.
At home, Kala writes to her big brother who lives in Florida. She also writes poetry at her house. At home, Isaiah makes creative stories and also writes poems. Kala also made a story about a girl who didn't know her name so, her name was declared no-name. Then, she found out her name was Mary and she had two brothers. Isaiah would like to point out that in the beginning of the year, Isaiah was terrible at writing his essays and hated them but recently, Isaiah kind of likes it. He thinks that the introduction and the conclusion are sort off difficult. Kala sometimes agrees with this statement. From this, we can conclude that we grew as eighth grade writers.

isaiah n' kala's reading reflection

As Kala and Isaiah became eighth graders in September, we weren't into reading that much. For instance, Isaiah barely read in school, Kala would usually read ten pages when she read. During the year, we both progressed into our reading. Kala started to read more pages in her books and Isaiah
started reading more books too. In the beginning of the year, Isaiah used to hate summarizing his book to the class, but now he kind of enjoys it. Kala didn't like sharing out to the class, but now she shares out frequently.

During the middle of the year Kala read way more books than in September. like Kala reading more thicker and more by challenging books. For example she read the challenging book, twilight and new moon. she also
read thick books like the uglies series. Isaiah has also read twilight and read thick books like harry potter series. In the middle we started determining our "interest" genres, which means finding the kind of book genres we like. For instance, Kala likes science and realistic fiction and Isaiah likes mystery and fiction novels. we also grew as readers by writing our journals. Isaiah knew nothing of how to write a satisfactory journal entry, but now he knows how to be specific and interesting in his journals. In the middle of the year Kala was enjoying independe
nt reading and she liked to share out and write responses to her reading, than in the beginning. Isaiah also liked to write responses and make connections used connection strategies and interpreting different connections.

Now, near the end of he year, Kala and Isaiah were reading more books and relating to them. Kala now strong by pacing good and reading fluently and understands what's going on in a story. She is reading more books and becoming a more successful reader and is using past strategies in her reading. Isaiah is also becoming a successful reader by understanding the concept of the stories he reads and retells/ summarizes what happened in the story. He predicts what will happen next in a story and visualizes characters in a story! He also uses and the book it strategies from the past and will always remember to use them in the future. From this we can conclude that we have grew as better readers from Sept. '08 - Jun. '09.

This he. When we read at helps our reading with the outside world and at home because when we read we make inferences to the outside world. We also sort of make examples of how a book is related to us or the world aroundwe can make inferences or examples on how a book is like the life we live. We can also make connections from a book to another book, the world, and a movie. This helps us because we don't always have to make connections in reading class ONLY. We can make connections all around us. At home, at school, the place we travel, and the world around us, basically. This is why we have grew as readers.
